Pokémon Yellow was one of the few games able to interact with the Game Boy Printer.

Pokémon Yellow was the fourth Game Boy game to have a yellow cartridge. The other three were Donkey Kong Land (1995), Donkey Kong Land 2 (1996) and Donkey Kong Land III (1997).

The surfing Pikachu obtainable in this version, either through Pokémon Stadium or at Nintendo events, had previously been referenced in the anime as "Puka", a blue-eyed Pikachu belonging to a surfer. Winning this Pokémon also unlocks a special minigame, "Surfing Pikachu".

The infamous Old Man glitch, which allowed players to encounter MissingNo, was patched in the wild for this version. MissingNo can still be encountered through other glitch methods, but it is difficult, as it will often crash the game.

This game includes another design of Cerulean Cave, one that had been redesigned between the original Pokémon: Green Version (1996) and the Japanese Pokémon: Red Version (1996) and later carried over to the Japanese and international Red and Pokémon: Blue Version (1996).

The sprites for Blue, Brock, Misty and Erika were redesigned for this version. The first three were meant to resemble their anime counterparts more closely. In Erika's case, in the original Pokémon: Green Version (1996), Pokémon: Red Version (1996) and Pokémon: Blue Version (1996), Erika wore her kimono crossed right over left, a Japanese custom for the dead at funerals. In this version it was corrected to left over right. It has been speculated that Erika's specialty may have been the Ghost type before it became Grass.
