Sir Daniel Day-Lewis had prominent and very different roles in both: in this film he played a repressed, snobbish upper-class Edwardian man, while in Laundrette he played a working-class gay former skinhead who falls in love with an ambitious Pakistani businessman in Thatcher's London. When American critics saw Day-Lewis, then almost unknown in the US, in two different roles on the same day, many (including Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times and Sheila Benson of the LA Times) heaped praise on the range his portrayal of such different characters revealed.
