American Satan, in which Andy Biersack plays Johnny Faust, is a rock and roll retelling of Faust for the modern age. Faust is the hero of a classic German legend based on the historical Johann Georg Faust (c. 1480-1540). The learned Faust is extremely successful but dissatisfied with his life, which leads him to make a deal with the Devil at a crossroads, trading his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures.

The album cover seen on Mr. Capricorn's favorite table at the Rainbow Bar and Grill is Rainbow's Rising, released in 1976. The drawing of a fist holding a rainbow was made by Ken Kelly, known for designing album covers for KISS. The band is widely reported to have taken the name Rainbow from the iconic Hollywood landmark featured in this film. As of 2017, the only surviving members of the band who played on that record are guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (formerly of Deep Purple) and keyboardist Tony Carey; the late Ronnie James Dio and Jimmy Bain are in fact buried not far away at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills cemetery. The band's other member, Cozy Powell, died in a car accident in 1998.
