Kuru disease is mentioned twice over the course of the film. Kuru is a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by prions, abnormal proteins that affect the brain. It was mostly recorded among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea in the 20th century and was linked to funerary cannibalism rituals in which tribe members consumed the brains of deceased relatives. This practice made the transmission of the prion possible. Symptoms: loss of motor coordination, tremors, difficulty swallowing and speaking, mood changes and eventually dementia. Progression: rapid and inevitably fatal, usually within a year of the onset of symptoms. There is no treatment: "mad cow disease." As with other prion diseases such as Kuru, it helped scientists better understand prions and their ability to cause infectious diseases without containing a virus or bacteria.
