During production, Ava's name was Eve. Likely because of the similarity to Killing Eve (2018), the studio decided to change the main character's name after the film was completed. This later affected the title. Since all scenes were shot before this decision, it likely required the cast to do additional voice work or reshoots.

In August 2018, the production came under criticism because Matthew Newton, who was then set to direct, was accused of numerous assault and domestic violence allegations. In addition to the allegations, he had also pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend Brooke Satchwell. Jessica Chastain, a vocal advocate of the MeToo movement, was accused of hypocrisy for working with Newton. Newton would eventually step down from directing the film and was replaced by Tate Taylor. Newton is credited as the film's writer.

The French Eva stars Isabelle Huppert. Huppert played the mother of Jessica Chastain's character in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them (2014). Chastain plays the title role of Ava in this film.
