It took Joss Whedon a year to persuade Aaron Taylor-Johnson to accept the role of Pietro. Taylor-Johnson was worried about the intensity of Marvel contracts, the time constraints and the fact that the cast would be so large. Even after accepting the role he was still nervous, but he was relieved to learn that his friend and Godzilla (2014) co-star Elizabeth Olsen would play his sister and would be his filming partner for much of the movie.

Lou Ferrigno contributed to the voice of The Incredible Hulk in this film. He has played the Incredible Hulk in nearly all live-action versions since 1978. According to Aaron Taylor-Johnson, no one realized until the last day of shooting that no plans had been made for a celebration party. As a result, at the end of the day Joss Whedon gathered the cast and led them around the small Italian town where they were filming, in heavy snowfall, until they found a suitable place for a party. They eventually found a small club, and the cast danced with Whedon until four in the morning.

At around the 1-hour 20-minute mark, Joss Whedon describes Ultron as an all-knowing "teenager." In the film, one of Ultron's lines — delivered to Captain America while Black Widow and Hawkeye try to distract him so they can secure the Cradle — is the highly stereotypical teenage phrase "Leave me alone!" Earlier, when Ultron is abandoned by Wanda and Pietro, he tries to follow them like a child blown up by his friends.
