(About 1 hour 3 minutes in) The compound used on the main dart throw to hire Tyler Jackson's men is probably curare; this is the common name for various plant-extract alkaloid arrow poisons originating from indigenous peoples in Central and South America. Used as a paralyzing agent for hunting and treatment, curare becomes active only through a poisoned arrow or dart, or by direct contamination of a wound via injection. These poisons work by competitively and reversibly inhibiting the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), a subtype of the acetylcholine receptor found at the neuromuscular junction. This causes weakening of the skeletal muscles and, when administered in sufficient doses, death by suffocation due to paralysis of the diaphragm.
