To capture the stormy feel of the race, the crew recorded hoofbeats by attaching microphones to the horses and buried GoPro cameras in the sand. Cameras were also placed on the chariots and the people; one of them was mounted on a soccer ball in the middle of the track as the horses ran over it. The two lead actors did most of their driving without injury. Each driver wore Kevlar under his costume.

Farcy is a highly contagious, fatal animal disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei. It is also highly contagious and deadly to humans (in humans the disease is called Glanders and has a startling mortality rate even with modern treatment). The horse Coal has no chance of recovery, or of improvement in any way, and keeping it alive with such a diagnosis would have meant the death of not only the horses but of all the people around it. To date, the only treatment is extremely rapid detection and rapid, prolonged, intensive, specific modern antibiotic therapy, usually accompanied by quarantine. At that time (and up to the 1900s), the only effective way to manage Farcy and Glanders was to quickly cull everyone who contracted the disease and everyone who had contact with or proximity to the infected. The bacterium is dangerous enough to have a storied history as a biological weapon throughout human history, including in recent periods such as both World Wars and the Cold War. Glanders continues to be classified by health authorities as a Tier 1 Select Agent / Category B biothreat due to its high aerosol infectivity, high mortality rate and the absence of effective countermeasures such as vaccines for humans or other animals.
