The choice of Christmas Eve gave the film a metaphorically powerful setting, but the winter atmosphere forced the crew to contend with difficult weather conditions. Producer Teddy Schwarzman recalls having to deal with a cyclonic snowstorm that paralyzed all the roads in New York and Yonkers, where the crew planned to shoot a scene. Julia Roberts, who has lived in New York for 18 years, says she had never experienced a winter on the East Coast to equal the one on this film's set.

The choice of filming locations was crucial to creating the suburb that forms the film's backdrop. Among the natural spots scouted by location manager Robert T. Striem in Westchester and Rockland counties north of New York were small towns such as Haverstraw, Larchmont, Sloatsburg, Garnerville and Mamaroneck, where the production established the Burns's home.
