Sissy Spacek's Best Actress Oscar for playing Loretta Lynn created a rare situation in Academy history, as the real Loretta Lynn was in the audience to witness the win. That same evening, when Robert De Niro won Best Actor for his role as LaMotta in Raging Bull (1980), the boxer Jake LaMotta was also among the audience members in the pavilion, making the occasion even rarer.

In the funeral scene, everyone was supposed to sing "Amazing Grace" around the body of Loretta's father. Mid-shoot, Levon Helm sat bolt upright in the coffin and insisted they were singing the song wrong. He told them it had to be done in the old call-and-response style. By chance, Phyllis Boyens's father was also on the film set. Nimrod Workman was a well-known singer, coal miner and activist, and his lines can be heard as the others sing in response to him.

According to Loretta Lynn, her husband Doolittle wanted nothing to do with Tommy Lee Jones, who played him, shortly before filming began in Butcher Holler. Jones rented a jeep, got drunk on moonshine and drove around town in the vehicle, but was arrested for drunk driving, beaten for resisting arrest and thrown in jail. Doolittle liked him immediately after that.

Sissy Spacek was reluctant to take the lead role and preferred a project by Nicolas Roeg instead. She had insisted on singing her own songs for the film in the hope of scaring off the producers. The real Loretta Lynn announced early on that Spacek would play her on a talk show, so Spacek was torn between taking the film role or choosing the other project. Her mother-in-law advised her to pray that evening for a sign about what to do, and she did. Spacek then went for a drive with her husband in her mother's car, where the radio was tuned to a classical music station that changed its format every evening. As the car left the parking lot, Loretta Lynn's song "Coal Miner's Daughter" came on the radio. Spacek then accepted the role.

The film places strong emphasis on the myth Loretta Lynn invented that she married at thirteen. In 2012 the Associated Press uncovered Lynn's Kentucky birth certificate, revealing that the singer was actually nearly sixteen when she married and had in fact been lying for decades. Lynn's spokesperson, who contacted the AP before the revelation was published, declined to comment. The discrepancy matters because it completely changes the narrative Lynn told in books and other public references; in reality, a girl under fifteen could not legally marry in Kentucky.

There is a scene in which Patsy screams on camera, but it turns out to be a false alarm: she is merely cooing over a lost dress she has just found. Loretta hears Patsy's scream and, thinking something serious has happened, holds her breath. Then she laughs and says, "You scared me." Seconds later it emerges that Patsy died in a plane crash. The scream serves as an example of dramatic foreshadowing, as director Michael Apted deftly hints at what is to come.

Original director Joseph Sargent wanted Cristina Raines, the star of Sargent's Sunshine (1973), in the lead role. Raines had played a country singer in Nashville (1975), though not the character inspired by Loretta Lynn, which was played by Ronee Blakley. Raines's Nashville role was based on Taffy Nivert, a future member of the Starland Vocal Band then best known as John Denver's partner. Raines screen-tested for this film, but Lynn's support for Sissy Spacek secured Spacek's casting. (Spacek and Raines had been casual friends when both were Eileen Ford agency models.) Raines's being passed over was a contributing factor in Sargent's decision to resign as director. Coincidentally, a song written for Raines's Flamingo Road (1980) character Lane Ballou to sing on that series — "You Never Gave Up on Me" — would give Lynn's sister Crystal Gayle her first top ten country hit.
