This was the first film Robert Pattinson worked on after completing shooting for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012). He said that the experience of working with David Cronenberg and premiering the film at Cannes made him realize he could pursue independent projects directed by auteurs, because he had previously not thought himself good enough or worthy to appear in auteur cinema.

David Cronenberg wrote the screenplay in six days. When he converted the book into screenplay format on his computer, he found it so perfect that the only work he did was separating the dialogue from the narration.

Colin Farrell was initially cast but was dropped due to scheduling conflicts with Total Recall (2012). Robert Pattinson was brought in to replace him.
