Melanie Lynskey told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2022 that everyone constantly made her feel ashamed of her body and that she was pressured to lose weight during the shoot. She had to wear Spanx under her costumes and received criticism about her body from the costume designers and her makeup artist on set. She said: "All the girls had this regimen they had to go on. It was ridiculous. I was already starving myself and as thin as I could be for this body, and I was still a four. It was just constantly feedback of like, 'You're not pretty. You're not pretty. A lot of it in your early 20s was about beauty and how people respond to you and do people want to fuck you?"

"Coyote Ugly" is when you wake up after a one-night stand and find the person next to you so ugly that, if they were sleeping on your arm, you would gladly gnaw that arm off to get away without waking them. The term comes from real coyotes being able to escape by gnawing off a trapped leg. In the film, the bar is ironically named Coyote Ugly because the girls who work there are so attractive.

January Jones auditioned for the role of Violet Sanford. It was only the second audition of her career, and she said in an interview that an unexpected request completely ruined it. She had done the readings for the acting portion, and then Jerry Bruckheimer asked her to come and dance on the table. She was told she would be doing pole dancing, but there was no pole. Jones said she turned beet red. "It was so bad and he said, 'Sweetheart, you read great, but you have no rhythm.' I called my manager and said, 'I don't want to do this anymore.'".
