No CGI was used for the scene in which Sharlto Copley's character Vernon is set on fire. The actor performed the stunt himself, protected by a fire-resistant suit, with four men standing by with fire extinguishers.

The stunt in which the van drives over Stevo's head was performed practically. It relied on a Penn and Teller trick in which one side of the vehicle is heavily weighted down while the other is not; the tires are then replaced with softer rubber or foam ones. Ben Wheatley performed the stunt himself to prove it was safe.

The IRA wanted to procure the M16 rifle, still regarded today as the best all-round weapon, but the arms dealers were supplying the more modern yet generally inferior Beretta model used by NATO and the Italian armed forces. It is a more agile ergonomic choice but lacks some of the robustness of the American model. Beretta developed the sc70-223 together with SIG after Colt refused its request to produce the M16 under licence.
