In an unusual move, the film was actually shot for a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. However, the first edited scenes were done with unmatted footage and later masked to 2.40:1. The directors preferred the 1.85:1 version, which allowed the audience to see more information and better suited the handheld camera work, so the aspect ratio was changed. Miraculously, none of the previously unused image information required any boom microphones to be digitally removed.

This film shares many connections with Blade Runner (1982): as Gorge browses different outfits for Angie to wear in Society, one of them is the same costume Pris wears at Blade Runner's climax (a black one-piece bodysuit, white face with a black stripe across the eyes). Much of the cyberpunk aesthetic used across the cast also came from Blade Runner. The endings of both films (the original) also involve the main character and his love setting off on a winding mountain road.
