At around the 20th minute of the film, Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) picks up a book titled "Desert Assault" written by her father, John Kane; the name is also one of several aliases used by the fictional character David Webb, better known as Jason Bourne, in the Bourne series.

Haywire is the third and, as of 2024, last collaboration between Soderbergh and screenwriter Lem Dobbs. Their first director-screenwriter collaboration was Kafka (1991). Their second project was The Limey (1999), during and after which they had notorious arguments. The tense relationship can be heard quite clearly on The Limey DVD commentary.

The ending is the same as that of Soderbergh's previous film written by Lem Dobbs, The Limey (1999). In both, the hero pursues his revenge target on the beach until the target recklessly steps onto rocks in a quarry and breaks an ankle. The enemy confesses the wrong they committed in detail. The hero walks away, leaving them where they fell.

Mallory (Gina Carano) carries a Glock 19 as her primary weapon. Aaron (Channing Tatum) is first seen with a SIG-Sauer P228. Mallory and Aaron are shown carrying Micro Uzis. Paul (Michael Fassbender), Kenneth (Ewan McGregor) and many other characters carry Glock 17s, the full-size 9 mm Glock. Glock's numbering system can be hard to remember because the number always relates to the patent associated with the weapon rather than the caliber it is chambered in.

The target of the so-called "rescue" is named "Jiang" (Anthony Brandon Wong). This is one letter off from "Jang," as in Jang Song-Thaek, the uncle of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Ironically, Kim Jong-un had Jang Song-Thaek executed in 2013. This is the same outcome "Jang" meets in this film. It was two years after this film's premiere.
