Ram, the ideal son, accepted this without any objection, with Sita and his younger brother Lakshman joining him. But when Bharat learned of it, he never forgave his mother, because he loved his brother and never wanted the throne. He too tried to bring Ram back, but Ram refused because he had given his word to Kaikeyi. Bharat then vowed to serve only as the caretaker of the throne until Ram returned, and to keep Ram's slippers, or khadaaun, on the throne as a symbol that Ram was the true king.
