The film is a semi-autobiographical exploration of fame, identity and self-destruction. The events in the film are inspired by a real-life incident in which The Weeknd lost his voice during a September 2022 concert at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, only one night after performing at the same stadium.

In one scene, Barry Keoghan's character Lee tells The Weeknd how they dropped out of school and ran away from home. La Mar Taylor, The Weeknd's creative director, partner and best friend since 2007, when they were both 17, actually did these things when they were both just starting out in the music business.

Jenna Ortega's character is named Anima. In Jungian psychology, "anima" refers to the (partly) feminine aspects of a man's soul. On one hand, this name may give the impression that the young woman is merely a product of The Weeknd's imagination. (Note her sudden disappearance toward the end of the film.) On the other hand, Anima is seen interacting with others while The Weeknd is miles away, which suggests she is real.
