In the book, the dog Maggie steals was a purebred boxer. Director Curtis Hanson chose to change this, noting that films inspire people to adopt the same breed of dog seen on screen. Hoping to inspire people to adopt a shelter animal, Hanson opted for a mixed breed instead.
