    Michel Audiard was chosen as the project's screenwriter. However, at the time he was focused on writing The Grilling (1981), and so his first draft was not very convincing. Francis Veber was then brought in as a script doctor, something he had previously done on a Jean-Paul Belmondo film with The Outsider (1983). Audiard cared so little that he did not mind his son Jacques Audiard, the future director, receiving praise for the story while he received praise for the screenplay. According to those not listed in the credits, Jacques Audiard did nothing more than act as an intermediary between Veber and Michel Audiard.
