Jane Horrocks performed all of her own singing in the film.

The building used for the exterior shots of Hoff's Record Shop was on Barwick Terrace in Scarborough. It had been abandoned for years and was restored specifically for this film's shoot. It was demolished shortly after filming. The nightclub scenes were shot at Wallis's Cayton Bay Holiday Centre, about three miles south of Scarborough, which, like the record shop, has unfortunately since been demolished.

Although Michael Caine was semi-retired at the time, he was initially set to play Sir August De Wynter in The Avengers (1998) but lost the part to Sean Connery. The day after losing the role, he received the script for Little Voice and immediately knew he had to make the film.
