The final scene, in which Lucas returns to school as a hero and receives his letterman jacket, was reshot in a single day. It was shot on a cold day in December 1985 even though the scene is set in autumn. The extras had to wear shorts and T-shirts, and because their breath was visible, the cinematographer placed gels on the windows to hide it. Filming began at 7:00 a.m. and was finally completed after midnight.
