    Adrien Morot and Kathy Tse of Morot FX Studio created an animatronic puppet version of M3GAN used for dialogue and close-ups. There was also a second animatronic used for certain scenes, as well as a non-puppet motion stunt version of M3GAN. The animatronic M3GAN was puppeteered by Adrien and Kathy together using various techniques, including radio-controlled facial expressions, automated lip sync for dialogue (with temporary lines provided during shooting by New Zealand actress Kimberley Crossman), and a puppeteer physically moving M3GAN's head and body.

    With a budget of $12 million, principal photography began in June 2021 in Los Angeles, California, and Auckland, New Zealand. Auckland's suburbs were used to lend the film a "Denver, Colorado feel." Filming was completed in mid-August, just before New Zealand's COVID-19 lockdown. After the original cut was deemed too violent, the film underwent reshoots in post-production to obtain a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association.

    In a 2023 interview with Screen Rant, Gerard Johnstone detailed parts of the film's now-famous dance scene: "The really funny thing was, these movies are made on such a tight schedule. We had about five dance scenes and they were all great. This was really the first one we were able to do, and it was incredible to see how much it worked. Thank God I didn't change it. Thank God I didn't do anything else, because it just felt like it was at a perfect level." He added that it was something someone could do at home, aside from the backflip. But the dance has a meaning, and it was always important that it not be done just for the sake of dancing. While taking the guillotine, she was doing it to distract the man.
