Just days before its release, Salman Khan's starring vehicle Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya was mired in a rare kind of controversy. The Urdu poet Nida Fazli accused the film's lyricist Sameer of lifting lines from his poetry collection published in 1978. According to Fazli, the opening lines of the song 'Sajan Tumse Pyar Mein' were taken from his work. Having received no response from Sameer, Fazli planned to file a plagiarism suit. Sameer had cleverly altered the lines Fazli claimed. Sameer, however, insists the song is a minor variation of a Bhojpuri number he wrote a decade earlier for Rishi Kapoor's Eena Meena Deeka.

According to a comment by lyricist Sudhakar Sharma on his YouTube channel, the song 'Saajan Tumse Pyar Ki Ladai Mein' ('Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya', 2005) was first recorded for the film Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge. The original song's lyrics were written by Sharma and recorded with the voices of Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik. That version, however, was discarded and left unused. The song was re-recorded for 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' (2005) by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik with minor changes to the arrangement and lyrics. Although the lyrics of the 2005 version differ slightly from the original, Sameer was credited as the lyricist.
