Neeraj Ghaywan was Anurag Kashyap's assistant director on Gangs of Wasseypur. In 2012 he planned the story of Masaan and wanted Anurag to make it. Due to his busy schedule, however, Anurag could not help but promise Neeraj that he would produce the film in the future. He kept his word. By the time the film went into production, you could see Phantom as a co-producer.
