Randhir Kapoor had read the novel Man, Woman and Child and wanted to produce and act in the film. It was planned quickly, and he let it be known that he wanted Shabana Azmi for the film. When Shabana heard this, she called Randhir Kapoor and begged him to drop the project because her then-boyfriend Shekhar Kapur was directing Masoom. Randhir laughed it off gracefully and told Shabana that he admitted he had at least stolen the idea of the novel. Shekhar Kapur took the story from the novel and attributed it to Gulzar.

The female version of Tujhse Naraaz Nahin Zindagi was added later, when the film was in advanced stages of production, because the music company HMV had raised concerns about releasing the album without a well-known singer. Since director Shekhar Kapur did not have the budget to shoot the song, editors Aruna Raje & Vikas used unused footage shot for the film to create the song sequence. When you look at the song, Shabana is not moving her lips; the song plays in the background.
