Before the dialogue reveals it, several clues confirm Stormy Llewellyn's death. When she gets up from the counter, the bullet hole in her shirt is visible for a very brief moment; although her shirt later appears much bloodier and full of bullet holes, the film has already shown that the dead can alter the appearance of their clothing and their state of health. After the shootout, no one looks at Stormy or interacts with her directly. Just before the revelation, Odd eats breakfast with Stormy, but while he has a full bowl of cereal and a glass of orange juice, Stormy's bowl and glass are clean and empty. The biggest clue, however, is that she never says a single word, which the film establishes and demonstrates throughout: the dead never speak.

Scenes involving the origins of Odd and Stormy were cut from the film, one featuring a young Stormy and her stepfather and another featuring a young Odd and his mother, who held a gun to her own head and was later taken away while cutting paper roses. Most of the scenes with DJ Shamus and Ozzy were also cut from the film.

Several important characters from the novel were cut from the film: Terri Stambaugh, the owner of the Grille where Odd works, who is a mother figure and a walking encyclopedia of Elvis information; DJ Shamus, the blind radio host (a sign advertising the radio station can be seen when Stormy and Odd first enter the Green Moon Bowling Alley); and Elvis's ghost. Little Ozzie also had a significant role in the novel, since he was the one who persuaded Odd to write his story, but he appears in only one scene of the film.

In a very strange coincidence, at the end of the film Odd is shown looking at the Las Vegas skyline, awaiting his next psychic mission to prevent another impending disaster. In this shot, the Mandalay Bay hotel is prominently visible along with other famous Vegas landmarks. In 2017, four years after the film's release, a deranged man carried out a mass shooting at a country concert, firing several shots from the 33rd floor of the Mandalay hotel, killing 60 people and wounding at least 413. This was, oddly enough (pun intended), the premise of the film: a deranged man goes on mass shooting rampages in two different locations, one a bowling alley and the other a crowded shopping mall.
