Scott Yagemann, who wrote the story and screenplay for the film, worked as a substitute high school teacher in the Los Angeles area for seven years. Yagemann claimed that 90% of the material in the film was based on events that happened in real life to him or to other teachers.

Scott Yagemann wrote the original screenplay in 1995 while working as a substitute teacher at a high school in the Los Angeles area, after a transfer student who resorted to violence threatened to kill him and his family. Yagemann reported the threat to the authorities and the student was arrested. About a week later, a district attorney contacted Yagemann to testify against the student in a court case in which the student had been tried a year earlier for stabbing another teacher's aide. This carelessness upset Yagemann, who had not been told about it beforehand, and inspired him to write this story.
