Terry (Russell Crowe) mentions that he was in the Australian Special Air Service Regiment and then left to join the British SAS because of a lack of action. In Australia after Vietnam, operational deployments were quite limited, and many soldiers completed entire careers without being assigned to operations. The British armed forces had greater international involvement. This changed for Australia from the late 1990s onward.

Initially all the extras were to be paid the normal rate used for American extras. However, the Ecuadorian government, which could not pay its actors such good wages, demanded that the production pay Ecuadorian wages.
