Except for Valerie (Amanda Seyfried), every character in Daggerhorn is played by an actor with brown eyes or brown contact lenses. The most notable of these is Julie Christie, famous for her blue eyes, who plays Valerie's grandmother. When Valerie encounters the werewolf and sees that it has brown eyes, this was intended to heighten the suspicion and mystery over who the hidden werewolf might be.

Sarah Blakley-Cartwright's novelization is based on the shooting script rather than the finished film. The film's director, Catherine Hardwicke, was friends with the book's author, Sarah Blakely-Cartwright, and encouraged her to write a book based on the script before the film was released. As a result, the book ends on a cliffhanger, with Valerie confronting Peter in the woods, not clearly caring whether he is the wolf, and the two sharing a kiss before the book abruptly ends; this was to avoid spoiling the film's ending. It caused outrage among readers who complained about the abrupt ending, and eventually the book's final chapter was published after the film's release.
