Rosaline never appears in William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet; she leaves Romeo before the play begins.

The project had been in development since 2010. In August 2011, Keira Knightley had entered talks for the role of Rosaline. In October 2011, Hailee Steinfeld and Deborah Ann Woll were being considered for the roles of Juliet and Rosaline respectively, while Dave Franco was considered for the role of Romeo.
