In the early pre-production stages of the film, Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft were considered for the roles of Beau Burroughs and Katherine Richelieu. When Bancroft died and Hoffman took on shooting commitments for other projects, the roles went to Kevin Costner and Shirley MacLaine.

Screenwriter Ted Griffin was the original director, but he was fired only twelve days into shooting, which led to Rob Reiner taking over. Production had to be halted for several days before filming resumed because Reiner was allowed to make changes to the script, the cast and the crew. As a result, original cast members Charlie Hunnam, Lesley Ann Warren, Tony Bill and Greta Scacchi were dropped from the project.
