On July 12, 2024, the third day of Alec Baldwin's trial, the judge dismissed the charges against him over the withholding of evidence in the case. The case was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it could not be retried. According to Reuters, Alec Baldwin cried in the courtroom when he heard the judge's ruling. He then left the New Mexico courtroom without commenting to the press. The actor had been charged with involuntary manslaughter after shooting cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during filming of Rust in 2021. On the third day of the trial, the judge granted the Motion to Dismiss requested by Baldwin's lawyers. They convinced the court that, following the Gutierrez-Reed case, police and prosecutors had tried to conceal evidence concerning ammunition that visually resembled the ammunition that killed Hutchins, in relation to ammunition handed over to police. Had Baldwin been found guilty, he would have faced up to 18 months in prison. He always denied the charge and said he did not know the prop gun was loaded with real bullets rather than blanks or dummy rounds. He also said he did not pull the trigger. As recently as April, the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for negligent homicide.
