Around the time Saugandh was released in the United Kingdom, the film was popular because the BBC was broadcasting the Mahabharat TV series between 1990 and 1992, giving everyone a chance to see them from another angle.

The film opened in Bombay with a 65% first week. Hearing this, Akshay Kumar began celebrating. He did so because 50% was needed to pass at university, and here Saugandh had scored 65%. Akshay thought this was a temporary result and that it was very good. However, he was later told that a 65% first week was bad.
