Special effects supervisor Roy Arbogast designed a compressed-gas "gun" that delivered 1,400 pounds of thrust to launch a full-size fiberglass replica Mercedes-Benz 560 SL roughly 60 meters out from a Marin County cliff before a fall of more than 150 meters. Six cameras captured the opening crash; many were positioned on the cliff face by rope-secured technicians, several with rock-climbing experience, while an Aerospatiale Lama helicopter with a 2,000-pound lift capacity placed the lower camera crews and their equipment. Arbogast also built a gimbal rig simulating the car's rolling interior for the shots of Dan Merrick and Judith Merrick inside the vehicle.
