The prom dance scene was not originally in the script and was not going to be filmed. It was added at the last minute to give the film a few more minutes of running time.

Zach does not want to go to Dartmouth, his father's alma mater. His father is played by Tim Matheson, who appeared in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), partly inspired by the time the film's writers spent at Dartmouth. At the end of Animal House, Matheson's character is said to be moving to California to become a doctor… and the same happens in this film.

In a 2013 interview, M. Night Shyamalan claimed that a ghost wrote the screenplay. Fleming denied this. In the film's Blu-ray commentary, director Robert Iscove confirmed that Shyamalan was hired as a contributor to the screenplay after pre-production had begun. After story points were added, the final rewrite was given back to Fleming so that he could give the story a unique voice for the young characters.
