When the screenplay for She's Funny That Way (2014) was first written, Peter Bogdanovich envisioned John Ritter, Cybill Shepherd and co-writer Louise Stratten in the lead roles. When the film was officially announced in 2012, the leads were Owen Wilson, Brie Larson and Olivia Wilde. Larson was to play the woman who goes from call girl to innocent actress, and Wilde was to play her therapist. Jason Schwartzman was reportedly in talks to play Wilde's playwright boyfriend. Because of production delays, Owen Wilson was the only actor who remained on the project. In February 2013, it was announced that Jennifer Aniston would replace Wilde in the therapist role, and Kathryn Hahn, Shepherd and Eugene Levy were also announced as cast members. Aniston was initially offered the role of Arnold Albertson's wife, Delta Simmons, but she preferred the therapist role, which she was also cast in. Although filming began on 11 July 2013, on 22 July Imogen Poots and Richard Lewis were announced in creative roles and the father role, and Will Forte took on the playwright role two days later. That same week, Joanna Lumley, Debi Mazar, Rhys Ifans, Lucy Punch, Ahna O'Reilly and Jake Hoffman were cast.

"Like most people today, Judy was cynical and was put off by the slightest hint of fantasy. Not us. We believe in the old saying that facts should never get in the way of a good story."
