In a 2023 interview on the Roger Ebert website, Kyle Edward Ball spoke about people seeing things as they are and the question of whether something is really there: "Since my YouTube channel, I've enjoyed playing with people's imaginations: holding a shot for a certain amount of time, including a sound you can't quite make out. Other people have brought this up, your mind starts picking out details that aren't even in the grain. During those dark shots, I was hoping people would play with their imaginations. Minds may be playing tricks on them, but is the grain playing tricks on people? I didn't think about it until people said, 'I see something there, is there something there?' And I was like, 'Well, is there? I don't know.'" There is a scene in the film where someone is standing in the dark, and he has not yet told anyone what it is. He does not think he will. Everyone will wonder which frame it is, but he knows very well that there is a single frame with someone standing in the dark. For now he will keep this secret. The only other person who could know is his cinematographer, Jamie McRae, and he hasn't told anyone either. There is a chance he has forgotten that someone is standing in the frame. Most things were intentional; things that play with people's fears and dreams, what we have in common. But the grain playing tricks was just a happy accident.
