In an article published for The Daily Beast in December 2022, Kevin Fallon reported that Michael Ausiello, a TV reporter for outlets such as TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly and TVLine, had interviewed Jim Parsons several times over the years Parsons appeared on The Big Bang Theory (2007). When Ausiello's source memoir was first published in 2017, Ausiello asked Parsons to moderate a Q&A session in Los Angeles, and when Parsons read the book to prepare for the panel, his husband Todd Spiewak found him crying in the living room. Spiewak suggested to Parsons that if he had such a strong emotional reaction to the story, he should pursue it for film — which is ultimately what they did together (both Parsons and Spiewak are producers).

It is adapted from TVLine's Michael Ausiello's autobiographical novel about his love story with Kit Cowan; it jumps back and forth non-chronologically between their courtship, relationship troubles and Kit's cancer. The novel is also available as a 10-hour audiobook read by the author.
