Stark begins laying out his plans to rebuild Stark Tower, spreading out a series of schematics for a section reserved for each Avenger, each identified by a symbol. Although the relationship between Captain America and Tony Stark is generally portrayed as prickly, the scene in which the heroes argue in the Helicarrier's lab, the scene in which Tony is hostile to Rogers at Barton's home in Ultron, and of course the events of Civil War and beyond in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) all point to this; at one point Tony even seems disappointed when he remarks, "That's the guy my dad couldn't shut up about?" Cap offers a rare compliment to Tony in this film when he tells Loki about the team during their confrontation. Tony describes Cap as "a super-soldier, a living legend, who kinda lives up to the legend."

Tony and Steve's constant bickering and their near-confrontation on the Helicarrier were filmed. After Loki's arrest, Steve was to make a disparaging remark about Tony's father, Howard. Later, after Coulson's death, Tony was to yell angrily at Steve, "We are NOT soldiers!" When the first scene was cut, however, Robert Downey Jr. felt that Tony's anger toward Steve was no longer warranted, so he delivered his line in a more subdued way. The ongoing friction between the characters foreshadows the story of Captain America: Civil War (2016), in which they take opposing sides over superhero registration.
