The Critic premiered at TIFF 2023 to mixed reviews and a dark ending that unsettled audiences. The film's distributor requested reshoots in March/April 2024 and a new cut of the film with a new ending.

The original 2023 cut of the film had a very different feel; Ian McKellen's character was further from the heart of the narrative. Distributor Lionsgate re-edited the film with newly shot footage not only to make him the centre of the film but also to give the story a more pleasant ending.
