Timur Bekmambetov's involvement as a producer gave the production the opportunity to use Russia for funding instead of the usual locations in the United States. Bekmambetov has a film production company in Moscow called Bazelevs, where most of the film was shot.

In August 2010, production was suspended for the planned two weeks because of extraordinary air pollution caused by heavy smoke from the forest fires surrounding Moscow. It ultimately resumed three weeks later. Even with this measure, the smoke appeared in many shots and had to be removed digitally in post-production.
