On December 19, 2007, Denzel Washington announced that he would give a $1 million gift to Wiley College so it could re-establish its debate team.

The famous Wiley College debate took place in 1935 and was actually against Southern Cal, not Harvard. Over a 15-year period, the team became famous for losing only 1 of 75 debates.

The second incident occurred only 48 miles from Wiley College.
