Star George C. Scott feuded with legendary director John Huston and co-star Tina Aumont during rewrites of the script while shooting. Huston quit the film after a shouting match with Scott. By chance Aumont was replaced by Trish Van Devere, with whom Scott fell in love and later married. Richard Fleischer replaced Huston.
