Netflix tried to reach an agreement with French distributors and cinema chains for a limited theatrical run before the streaming premiere, but this was blocked by strict French laws that prevent any film released in cinemas from being made available on a streaming service earlier than thirty-six months after its original theatrical release date. Although both films remained in the competition lineup, the festival responded to the controversy by changing its rules starting with the 2018 edition, stating that all filmmakers and producers submitting their work for the competition must be committed to obtaining regular theatrical distribution in France.

The house where the story takes place actually consists of three separate houses filmed to look like one. The interior was shot on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Because they needed an art studio in the basement, they filmed that part of the house in Brooklyn. Finally, the exterior of the house was shot north of New York.
