Adam Devine first got the story idea from writers Ben Zazove and Evan Turner in 2016. He wrote the idea in a notebook, then forgot about it for several years. When he later came across the notebook, he thought it was a great idea and, fearing the rights had already been sold, got in touch with the writers. Luckily that wasn't the case, and Devine was able to help develop the story.

That is when the yellow happy face was born.
