The original version of the film included a scene in which several ESU players lie on the yellow dividing line of a busy local road to test their courage. After two teenagers were killed and several others injured while imitating the stunt, Buena Vista cut the scene from the film. The scene appears on the Hong Kong Laserdisc and the Australian Region 4 DVD.

The character Steve Lattimer, played by Andrew Bryniarski, bears a striking physical and story resemblance to real-life former professional football player Tony Mandarich. Like Lattimer, Mandarich played college football at Michigan State University while abusing steroids and claiming to be clean. Both the fictional Lattimer and the real Mandarich were praised as physical specimens; Mandarich himself was said to weigh 330 pounds and to be able to run the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds. The scene in which Lattimer gets an "oil change" is nearly identical to the story Mandarich told about how he passed a drug test at the 1987 Rose Bowl. Unlike Lattimer, Mandarich was not found to have used drugs in college. He managed to be selected in the NFL draft, where he claimed to have stopped using steroids because the league had stricter testing than the NCAA. Just like Lattimer, Mandarich found he could not perform at the same level without steroids, and his NFL career ended after only nine years, including a four-year gap between teams.
