Before the script was rewritten, Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) from the first film was set to return only for an opening scene in which she would be killed.
- #002
The film was announced in 2009.

Pin-Up was reworked mid-shoot after the original actress commented that she felt claustrophobic while putting on the mask during the knife fight scene. She was sent home and the role was taken over by stunt performer Lea Enslin, though time constraints during the shoot were one reason Pin-Up does not appear on screen in the film.

After Kinsey fatally wounds Doll Face with a shotgun blast, she asks why they are doing this, and when Doll Face answers only "Why Not?", Kinsey immediately shoots her dead. This is a nod to Michael Haneke's controversial horror film Funny Games (1997), which influenced the first film. It also echoes a similar line from the first film, though Doll Face's answer then was "Because you were home," putting her in a position of power over her victim.

When Luke and Mike go to find the bodies, if you look carefully at the background you can see the strangers' truck parked in the dark.

While being chased at the end, Kinsey jumps into the back of a car. The scene is an obvious homage to the ending of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974).
- #007
The scene in which Dollface dangles the keys in front of Kinsey in the car is a nod to Scream (1996), where Ghostface does the same to Sidney.

Early in the film, Kinsey and Luke talk about how she can barely pick up a bat to play baseball. During the climax, she kills the Masked Man with a baseball bat.
- #009
There is a second alternate ending in which the Masked Man attacks the Doctor and Luke and Kinsey at the hospital, but this ending has not yet been released.
- #010
The Masked Man is the only killer in the film with no dialogue lines.
- #011
Pinup is only one of the three killers who does not kill anyone on screen in this film.
- #012
A scene was cut in which Luke, after hiding under the trailer while Kinsey goes for help, comes out and crawls, crossing paths only with the Masked Man, and ducks under one of the nearby trailers. The Masked Man hears and knows where he is, but instead of attacking him he moves along with him, walks away and returns to the hiding place, then begins to urinate half an inch from his face and walks off.
- #013
It is clear that the director does not like slasher films or home-invasion films.

BODY COUNT: 8 - Uncle Marv, Aunt Sheryl, Cindy, Mike, Pin Up Girl, Officer Brooks, Dollface, the Masked Man.
- #015
The scene in which Kinsey sets the truck on fire and the Masked Man gets out and collapses in front of her was inspired by Halloween II (1981), in which Dr. Loomis blows up the hospital room and Michael Myers walks out and collapses in front of Laurie.

The John Carpenter references include: the main title music closely resembles that of The Fog (1980), the burning car chasing the girl recalls Christine (1983), and the female killers use kitchen knives like Michael Myers in Halloween (1978).
- #017
At around 6 to 7 minutes in, in the scene where Christina Hendricks and Martin Henderson pack the car, they try to high-five each other while maintaining eye contact and visibly miss.

Many horror critics believe that, given their ability to be in the same place at the same time and to withstand damage, these 3 strangers are actually supernatural beings. This leads to the idea that all three would survive the first and second films, heading toward a possible third.
