The production had a very hard time finding a Hollywood actor to play Dexter. Most of those considered were either too expensive or were not interested in a film featuring no one they had heard of in the United States at the time. In the end Jeff Goldblum accepted the offer, thinking the film would not amount to much. He was surprised, however, to learn that it was a big hit in the UK and Europe and that a year and a half later it finally received a small release in the United States. It also opened the door to other film offers from the UK and Europe, which led to him becoming a cult actor and, indirectly, to his role in Jurassic Park (1993) a few years later.
