   Zachary Levi was the first choice to play Fandral in Thor (2011), but he could not accept due to a scheduling conflict with Chuck (2007), and the role went to Josh Dallas. Coincidentally, Dallas was unavailable for this film due to scheduling conflicts with Once Upon a Time (2011), so Levi was approached again. Levi was hesitant because he felt the Warriors Three were not explored enough in the first film, but Kevin Feige assured him they would play a bigger role. Levi later complained: "Not so much, as it turned out."

Mads Mikkelsen was also considered for the role but left the project due to a scheduling conflict with the concurrent shooting of Hannibal (2013). Both Cumberbatch and Mikkelsen later appeared in Marvel's Doctor Strange (2016) as hero and villain.

   Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is one of several actors who have appeared in both the MCU and Game of Thrones (2011). In the fifth season he played the slave trader Malko, who buys and sells Jorah and Tyrion as slaves. Clive Russell was Catelyn Stark's uncle, Brynden "Blackfish" Tully. Here he plays one of Asgard's guards and is seen detaining Jane and reporting Loki's escape to Odin. Peter Dinklage appears as the dwarf Eitri, who helps Thor forge Stormbreaker in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Richard Madden will play Ikaris in Eternals (2021), and Kit Harington will play the Dark Knight Dane Whitman. Emilia Clarke will also appear in the Secret Invasion series.
