To promote the opening weekend of Tideland, director Terry Gilliam shut down the ticket line for The Daily Show (1996). He signed autographs, told jokes and posed for photos with fans, holding a sign that read: "Studio-less Film Maker, Family to Support, Will Direct for Food". "This is the state of independent filmmaking. You have to go out on the street and beg again. We have no shame anymore, we're running around the streets. The first weekend is everything, if the first weekend doesn't go well, you die."

Terry Gilliam directed Tideland on a very tight schedule, taking a six-month break from The Brothers Grimm (2005). He paused work on Grimm because he and Harvey Weinstein were arguing over the final cut. Because they threatened to pull out entirely, Gilliam began referring to the Weinsteins as the REAL Brothers Grimm.
